How to Set Up a Monitor Split Screen316
A split screen allows you to view multiple windows or programs simultaneously on a single monitor. This can be useful for multitasking, comparing information, or keeping an eye on multiple feeds. There are several ways to set up a split screen, depending on your operating system and preferences.
Windows 10
Keyboard Shortcut:
To quickly split your screen in Windows 10, use the following keyboard shortcut:
Windows key + Left/Right arrow
This will snap the active window to the left or right half of the screen.
Drag and Drop:
1. Open the windows you want to display in the split screen.
2. Click and hold the title bar of one of the windows and drag it to the edge of the screen.
3. As you approach the edge, a gray outline will appear on the edge of the screen.
4. Release the mouse button when the outline appears and the window will snap to the left or right half of the screen.
5. Repeat the process with the second window to create the split screen.
macOS
Split View:
1. Open the windows you want to display in the split view.
2. Click and hold the green button (maximize) in the top-left corner of one of the windows.
3. While holding the button, drag the window to the left or right edge of the screen.
4. Release the mouse button when the outline appears and the window will fill half of the screen.
5. Select the second window and it will automatically fill the other half of the screen.
Mission Control:
1. Click the Mission Control icon in the Dock or use the keyboard shortcut Control + Up arrow.
2. Click and hold the title bar of one of the windows and drag it to the top of the screen and hold it there.
3. Click on the second window and drag it to the left or right half of the first window.
4. Release the mouse button to create the split screen.
Hot Corners:
You can also use Hot Corners, which are customizable screen corners that can trigger certain actions, such as splitting the screen. To set up Hot Corners:
1. Go to System Preferences > Mission Control.
2. Click on the Hot Corners tab.
3. Select a corner and assign it the action Split Desktop Left or Split Desktop Right.
Linux
Tile Windows:
1. In your window manager, such as GNOME or KDE, open the windows you want to display in the split screen.
2. Click on the maximize button in one of the windows.
3. Click on the same button again to cycle through different tiling options, including vertical and horizontal splits.
KWin Script:
KWin is a window manager for KDE. You can use a script to automatically split your screen into multiple sections.
1. Open a terminal and enter the following command:
kwin --split horizontal
This will split the screen horizontally into two equal halves.
2. To split the screen vertically, use the following command:
kwin --split vertical
3. You can customize the split sizes by adding percentages to the command:
kwin --split horizontal 70% 30%
This will split the screen horizontally with the left pane being 70% wide and the right pane being 30% wide.
Additional Tips
You can adjust the size of the split screen by dragging the border between the windows.
If you want to close one of the windows in the split screen, simply click the close button on that window.
You can use third-party software to create more complex split screen arrangements, such as FancyZones for Windows or AquaSnap for macOS.
Split screens can be a convenient way to maximize your workflow and get more done. By following these steps, you can easily set up a split screen on your operating system.
